The de-clutter part of project downsize has almost come to an end. I wish I had kept total of the stuff given away, sold and dumped. 11 years of things unnecessarily kept! 11 years of holding on to silly things just because. 11 years of using the roof space and it is a big space as a secondary dumping ground. 11 years of holding on to stuff that probably held me back. 11 years of stuff that hopefully has taught me that it is okay to let go on things and to be honest you don’t need to keep everything that you have ever owned!
A week today we move out of our house, I guess as the time gets closer the reality of moving sets in. I am so excited about the move but I wouldn’t be me if I was more than a little sad. My children have grown up here, lots of people have seen them grow from little tots to who the are now. Goodbyes will feel hard, people I will miss. I will miss the beach and the open space we have here. I will miss my en suite and the fact 75% of us can use the loo at the same time. Three bathrooms and the new house just one! But I am looking forward to so much more than just strengthening my bladder muscles!
So I am mostly onto the regular packing, I am moving on to the organise part of this project. The downsize part will be moving in, which won’t be for two weeks! Watch this space for possible tears when I realise perhaps I haven’t let go of quite enough stuff!
Rather than waffle like I usually do, I have done a list of things that I found useful. My brain is rather scrabbled with stuff right now so excuse the random content but anyway I hope you find it useful! Some relates just to moving but other useful tips too.
Caffeine & stress
My stress levels were up sky-high a few weeks ago, so I seriously reduced my cups of tea and switched some to de-caf and drank more water. I was amazed how quickly my stress levels dropped. Stressful things like moving makes you automatically pop the kettle on or reach for the wine! But both actually decreased your ability to cope in excess!
Pillow cases, duvet covers & old flannels
Yes this maybe because my linen cupboard is another hoarding hide out but I had excess pillow cases and duvet covers. Some have been given away but others came in really useful for packing and protecting pictures and canvases. One duvet cover is currently holding the hangers from the wardrobes as we are running out of boxes (aren’t boxes expensive to buy too and where to get good size free boxes?!) and because our furniture has to be stored for a week the extra duvet covers will be used to protect it whilst in storage. The collection of old flannels are going to be used to clean the house before we leave. As we can’t wash a load of cloths as soon as we get to our new home as that is a week later, using the flannels that would have been chucked out seems like a good option. Use then loose with no dirty cloths to deal with on holiday!
I am a notebook juggler. I can see three from where I am sat, so important stuff to remember is being written on small notepaper and clipped on the note board. Once you have done it all you don’t need it anymore, screw up the paper and chuck it in the recycling shouting goal is you aim right! Even more satisfying than crossing off something on your list. Try and get as much information out of your head onto paper so you don’t have to constantly think ‘I must remember that’. It really does work!
Everyone is different but I find if I set myself a timescale (realistic please note!) to get a job all ticked off this really works for me. Find out what motivates you to finish and use it!
These are really great, and I will use them once we move to save space. I have had really rubbish ones before so look for good ones that have good reviews. I bought mine from JML and they seem really good so far.
De-clutter your life once a year
One friend said that once a year we should sort our houses out as if we were moving out. That maybe a bit radical and time-consuming for me but I think de-cluttering once a year may well be the answer. Now Bex and Oscar are older to be honest there will be less stuff just more expensive they get as they get older! But sorting through all your stuff and getting rid of excess once a year seems like a plan to me. I seem to have held onto these plates which my two are slightly too old for now and they do have a few cracks in the patterns, so why did I keep them?! I am also hoping to get a better paperwork system in place (hark at me!) as quite often I play a game called hunt the bill and seem to keep bits of paper work that I don’t need too.
This is where I may score a big fat zero on environmental issues but mostly I am very good. By Thursday I want most things packed, we are eating supper out so but my stash of paper plates will be used for lunch on Thursday & Breakfast on Friday morning. Packing as much in advanced will mean that stressful major clean before you leave is all you have to do on the day you go.
So they you go, some random things as I told you but especially the de-clutter please take note or you will have weeks on end of de-cluttering should you decide to move and a de-cluttered house is a happier house so I am told. I am surrounded by boxes and it is no longer homely so I will confirm the other end!
Back to more packing….
